MonkeyWorld Ape Rescue Centre is in Dorset, Uk.
MonkeyWorld aim to rescue every ape who is in need - Mainly chimps but also orangutangs, gibbons, lemars and more! Actually the only apes they do not rescue are gorillas.
The apes are rescued from ill treatment, being used in the pet trade or tourist industry or being experimented on etc and then rehomed at MonkeyWorld in as close to there natural environment as possible.
I first went to Monkey World about 7years ago, since then the park has doubled in size.
We adopted 2 chimps, Hananya and Tikko and for the annual fee you receive free entrace into the park for that year, 4 newsletters and a photo and adoption certificate.
Here are a couple of stories about some of the chimp residents who have been saved….
“Trudy is a female chimpanzee who was confiscated from circus trainer Mary Chipperfield. Trudy’s previous owner was convicted on 12 charges of cruelty when she was filmed beating Trudy with a riding crop. Trudy is now a fully integrated member of this large group and is looked after by all the members”
“Charlie is a male chimpanzee who was used as a photographers’ prop in Spain. He arrived at the park on 05/06/89 and we estimate he was born during 1980. He is a large male with a drawn face and pointy ears. Charlie’s history was traumatic. When he first arrived he was a drug addict, had a broken jaw, cataracts, and only four teeth. Charlie has a very strong character and is often seen displaying both to other chimps as well as to passing tanks on the road.”
“Pacito is a male chimpanzee who was rescued from a garden shed in Barcelona. He arrived at the park on 07/11/97 and we estimate that he was born during 1990. When he arrived he could not climb and he did not know how to behave like a chimpanzee. Pacito took a long time to learn how to behave like a chimp but he learned a lot from Charlie. Now he gets along well with everyone in the bachelor group and is particularly close to Freddy.”
